“Although there were a few very small teething problems when the first turbine went up, VG was quick to sort those out. We have friends who installed turbines through VG, so their praise of the company made our decision to go with them an easy one."

“It is difficult to predict what the turbines will produce in the first year, but they appear to be performing extremely well,” he added.

The turbines provide all the electricity for the farm steading and house at Larroch Farm, with the remainder going into the grid. Larroch has 220 acres, while the Wallace family’s home farm of Whitehills is a 350 acre unit. The farms are home to a 180 Simmental cross suckler cow herd and a 350 Mule ewes flock.

“Farming is difficult right now” said Martin. “We don’t know what the future holds, nor what will happen with the CAP reform, so we wanted to keep our options open and look for other incomes.

“The turbines each come with a five year warranty” he said. “But I would like to think they will still be spinning in 20 years time.”
